SUGARCREEK FIRST UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST | SUGARCREEK, OH

The Sugarcreek First United Church of Christ building is on a 1.2 acre urban site and includes a sanctuary, fellowship hall (with commercial kitchen), library, and classroom space.  After an unfortunate lightning strike destroyed the sanctuary by fire, we designed an addition consisting of a 380 seat sanctuary with balcony and administrative offices, as well as an auxiliary chapel.  Stained glass was an important component to this traditional congregation and we were able to salvage one stained glass window from the original building and we encorporated it into the main entry elevation.  As they enter the new sanctuary, members pass beneath the large arch top window as a reminder of the old church.  This respect for tradition led the building committee to commission the 'Phoenix' brick sculpture at the curved staircase as a symbol of thier 'rise from the ashes'.  (Project Architect at MKC Assoc.)
